Worked practice questions

The **slope of the tangent** to the curve $y = f(x)$ at point $(a, f(a))$ is:

  1. $f(a)$
  2. $f'(a)$
  3. $1/f'(a)$
  4. $f''(a)$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. $f'(a)$

Tangent slope at $x = a$ equals $f'(a)$, the derivative evaluated at that point. Normal slope = $-1/f'(a)$ (perpendicular).

The slope of the tangent to $y = x^3 - 3x + 1$ at $x = 2$ is:

  1. 3
  2. 6
  3. 9
  4. 12
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. 9

$y' = 3x^2 - 3$. At $x = 2$: $y' = 3(4) - 3 = 9$.
