Worked practice questions

General solution of cos θ = 0:

  1. θ = π/2 + nπ
  2. θ = nπ
  3. θ = π/4 + nπ
  4. θ = 0 + 2nπ
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. θ = π/2 + nπ

cos θ = 0 at θ = π/2 and 3π/2 (i.e., 90° and 270°). **General:** θ = π/2 + nπ where n ∈ ℤ. (Every π apart.)

If tan θ + cot θ = 2, find sin 2θ:

  1. 1/2
  2. 1
  3. 0
  4. 2
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. 1

We have tan θ + cot θ = sinθ/cosθ + cosθ/sinθ. That is tan θ + cot θ = (sin²θ + cos²θ)/(sinθ cosθ). That is tan θ + cot θ = 1/(sinθ cosθ). So tan θ + cot θ = 2/sin(2θ). We have **So 2/sin(2θ) = 2 → sin(2θ). So **So 2/sin(2θ) = 1.**.

If sin θ = 12/13 (acute θ in Q1), find tan(θ/2):

  1. 1/3
  2. 3/4
  3. 2/3
  4. 1/5
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. 2/3

cos θ = √(1 − sin²θ) = √(1 − 144/169) = √(25/169) = 5/13 (positive in Q1). We have tan(θ/2) = (1 − cos θ)/sin θ. That is tan(θ/2) = (1 − 5/13)/(12/13). That is tan(θ/2) = (8/13)/(12/13). That is tan(θ/2) = 8/12. So tan(θ/2) = 2/3.
