Worked practice questions

The magnitude of the zero (null) vector $\vec 0$ is:

  1. 1
  2. Undefined
  3. 0
  4. Any positive real number
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. 0

A zero vector is a vector whose initial and terminal points coincide, so $|\vec 0| = 0$. Its direction can be taken as anything convenient.

Vector $\vec{AB} = 2\hat i - 4\hat j + 7\hat k$ has initial point $A(1, 5, 0)$. The terminal point $B$ has coordinates:

  1. $(3, 1, 7)$
  2. $(-1, 9, -7)$
  3. $(2, -4, 7)$
  4. $(3, -4, 7)$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. $(3, 1, 7)$

$\vec{AB} = \vec b - \vec a$ ⇒ $\vec b = \vec a + \vec{AB} = (1+2)\hat i + (5-4)\hat j + (0+7)\hat k = 3\hat i + \hat j + 7\hat k$, i.e. $B = (3, 1, 7)$.
