Worked practice questions

The general equation for SHM is:

  1. x = A sin(ωt + φ)
  2. x = A e^(ωt)
  3. x = A t²
  4. x = A + ωt
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. x = A sin(ωt + φ)

x(t) = A sin(ωt + φ), where A is amplitude, ω is angular frequency, φ is phase. This satisfies d²x/dt² = -ω²x, the SHM equation.

A particle has SHM with x = A cos(ωt). At t = 0, the particle is at:

  1. x = A/2
  2. Random
  3. x = A (extreme position, v = 0)
  4. x = 0 with maximum velocity
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. x = A (extreme position, v = 0)

At t = 0: x = A cos(0) = A. So particle starts from extreme position (x = A). Velocity v = -Aω sin(ωt), at t=0 is 0. Particle starts from rest at maximum displacement.

Order the steps of EM wave generation by an accelerating charge

Read exercise and reference answers
Steps
  1. Charge accelerates, creating a changing electric field
  2. Changing E-field induces a changing magnetic field
  3. Changing B-field induces a changing E-field further away
  4. The coupled E and B fields propagate outward as a wave
  5. Wave travels in vacuum at c = 3×10⁸ m/s
