Worked practice questions

The SI unit of force is the:

  1. Pascal
  2. Joule
  3. Watt
  4. Newton
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. Newton

Force is measured in newtons (N). 1 N is defined as the force that produces an acceleration of 1 m/s² in a body of mass 1 kg (F = ma). Joule is work, pascal is pressure, watt is power.

Two equal and opposite forces act on a rope in a tug of war. The rope does not move because the forces are:

  1. Magnetic
  2. Frictional
  3. Unbalanced
  4. Balanced
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. Balanced

When two forces are equal in magnitude but opposite in direction, the NET force is zero — they are balanced. With no net force, the rope's state of motion does not change (Newton's first law: at rest, stays at rest).

Newton's first law states that an object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion continues at constant velocity, UNLESS:

  1. It is observed
  2. Time passes
  3. An unbalanced (net) external force acts on it
  4. It is heavy
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. An unbalanced (net) external force acts on it

**Newton's first law (law of inertia):** an object's state of motion changes only if there is an unbalanced external force. With zero net force, velocity stays constant (which includes zero velocity = at rest). This is why we keep moving forward when a bus stops suddenly (inertia).
