Worked practice questions

Which set lists representative elements (s-block and p-block) only?

  1. Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm
  2. Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn
  3. Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl
  4. Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl

1. Representative elements are in the s and p blocks (groups 1, 2 and 13-18). 2. Na, Mg are in Group 1 and 2 (s-block). 3. Al, Si, P, S, Cl are in the p-block of period 3. 4. Fe, Co, Ni etc. are transition (d-block) elements. 5. Ce, Pr etc. are inner transition (f-block) elements. 6. So only option A lists representative elements. _Source: syllabus Science Ch 5 'Periodic Classification of Elements'_

Which pair shows the diagonal relationship in the periodic table?

  1. Li and Mg
  2. Na and K
  3. O and S
  4. F and Cl
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. Li and Mg

1. Diagonal relationship pairs elements diagonally across the table. 2. Such pairs share similar properties despite being in different groups. 3. Lithium (Group 1, period 2) and magnesium (Group 2, period 3) are a classic example. 4. They form similar compounds (e.g. Li3N and Mg3N2). 5. Na-K and F-Cl are same-group pairs, not diagonal. 6. So Li and Mg is the diagonal pair. _Source: syllabus Science Ch 5 'Periodic Classification of Elements'_

Across period 3, which element forms the most acidic oxide?

  1. Sodium
  2. Sulphur
  3. Aluminium
  4. Magnesium
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. Sulphur

1. Period 3 starts with metals (Na, Mg, Al) and ends with non-metals. 2. Oxides go from basic to acidic across the period. 3. SO3 (the oxide of sulphur) is a strongly acidic oxide. 4. It dissolves in water to give H2SO4, a strong acid. 5. So sulphur forms the most acidic oxide of those listed. 6. Chlorine oxide is more acidic still but is not in the options. _Source: syllabus Science Ch 5 'Periodic Classification of Elements'_
