Worked practice questions

Four friends scored 4, 8, 12 and 16 runs. What is the mean score?

  1. 8
  2. 14
  3. 12
  4. 10
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. 10

1. Add all the scores: 4 + 8 + 12 + 16 = 40. 2. Divide by the number of scores, which is 4: 40 / 4 = 10. 3. The mean is therefore 10. Option 8 is only the second score and 12 is the third, neither is the sum divided by the count. 14 is just a larger score. _Source: Wikipedia, Arithmetic mean, Definition_

The mean of 5 numbers is 12. What is the sum of the five numbers?

  1. 17
  2. 48
  3. 60
  4. 72
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. 60

1. Mean = sum divided by the number of observations. 2. So sum = mean x count = 12 x 5. 3. 12 x 5 = 60. 17 adds instead of multiplies, 48 uses 4 numbers and 72 uses 6 numbers. _Source: Wikipedia, Arithmetic mean, Definition_

Four tests give an average of 15 marks. A fifth test gives 40 marks. What is the new average?

  1. 18
  2. 25
  3. 22
  4. 20
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. 20

1. The first four tests total 15 x 4 = 60 marks. 2. Adding the fifth test gives 60 + 40 = 100 marks over 5 tests. 3. New mean = 100 / 5 = 20. 18 and 22 come from guessing near 20, and 25 is the plain average of 15 and 40 ignoring how many tests there were. _Source: Wikipedia, Arithmetic mean, Definition_
