Worked practice questions

It is noon in Addis Ababa at 39°E. What is the time in Dar es Salaam on the same longitude?

  1. 12:00 am
  2. 12:00 pm
  3. 6:00 pm
  4. 11:00 am
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. 12:00 pm

1. Local time is determined by longitude, since the Earth turns through 15° of longitude every hour. 2. Places sharing the same meridian therefore share the same local time. 3. Addis Ababa and Dar es Salaam both lie on 39°E. 4. So when it is noon in one, it is noon in the other. 5. A time difference would require a difference in longitude, and here there is none. _Source: NECTA CSEE 2023 Geography 013, Question 1: Multiple Choice Questions, item (vii)_

Through how many degrees of longitude does the Earth turn in one hour?

  1. 10°
  2. 24°
  3. 20°
  4. 15°
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. 15°

1. The Earth completes one full rotation of 360° in 24 hours. 2. Dividing gives $\dfrac{360}{24}=15$ degrees per hour. 3. So each 15° of longitude corresponds to one hour of time difference. 4. Equivalently, 1° of longitude equals four minutes of time. 5. This is why two places on the same meridian, such as Addis Ababa and Dar es Salaam, share the same local time. _Source: NECTA CSEE 2023 Geography 013, Question 1: Multiple Choice Questions, item (vii)_
