Worked practice questions

According to the Bohr model, the ground-state energy of a hydrogen atom is:

  1. $-13.6$ eV
  2. $-6.8$ eV
  3. $-27.2$ eV
  4. $-3.4$ eV
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. $-13.6$ eV

Bohr's energy formula: $E_n = -\dfrac{13.6}{n^2}$ eV for hydrogen. For the ground state $n = 1$: $E_1 = -13.6$ eV. - Option A ($-3.4$ eV) is $E_2$. - Option D ($-27.2$ eV) is the magnitude of *twice* the ground-state energy (a common confusion with the virial-theorem relation $E = -\frac{1}{2}|U|$).

Steps
  1. Thomson: a sphere of positive charge with electrons embedded in it
  2. Rutherford: mass and positive charge concentrated in a tiny nucleus
  3. Bohr: electrons in stable stationary orbits, from three postulates

Questions
  1. Statement is true
    Yes
    Statement
Rutherford's model predicts atoms should be unstable.
  2. Statement is true
    Yes
    Statement
That is because an accelerating electron would spiral into the nucleus.
  3. Statement is true
    Yes
    Statement
It also fails to explain the line spectra of elements.
  4. Statement is true
    No
    Statement
Rutherford's model explains line spectra well.
  5. Statement is true
    Yes
    Statement
The nucleus is roughly one ten-thousandth the size of the atom.
The chapter names both failures explicitly. Source: syllabus Physics, Ch 12 Atoms.
