Brunner's glands are located in the:

  1. pancreas, where they release insulin
  2. liver, where they produce bile
  3. duodenum, where they secrete alkaline mucus
  4. stomach, where they secrete pepsin
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. duodenum, where they secrete alkaline mucus

1. Brunner's glands sit in the wall of the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. 2. They secrete an alkaline mucus. 3. That mucus neutralises the acidic chyme arriving from the stomach and protects the duodenal lining. 4. Neutralising the acid also raises the pH to the range the pancreatic and intestinal enzymes need. 5. Placing them in the pancreas or liver leads to answers about insulin and bile, both recorded and both wrong. _Source: NECTA ACSEE 2023 Biology 133/1, Question 6: Nutrition_

Temperature limits photosynthesis when it is:

  1. the same as the surrounding air temperature
  2. the only factor present in the leaf
  3. high enough to denature the enzymes involved
  4. above the carbon dioxide concentration
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. high enough to denature the enzymes involved

1. A factor limits photosynthesis when it is the one holding the rate down. 2. Photosynthesis is enzyme-controlled, and enzymes are proteins. 3. At high temperatures those enzymes denature, so the rate falls even when light and carbon dioxide are plentiful. 4. At low temperatures the enzymes work slowly, which also limits the rate. 5. Comparing temperature with carbon dioxide concentration is meaningless, since the two are measured in different units. _Source: NECTA ACSEE 2023 Biology 133/1, Question 6: Nutrition_
