A1 only
B2 only
CBoth 1 and 2
DNeither 1 nor 2
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. 2 only
Answer: B. Only statement 2 is correct.
The 32ND SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES were held in TOKYO, JAPAN from 23 July to 8 August 2021 (postponed from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but retained the 'Tokyo 2020' branding).
Statement 1 is WRONG. The OFFICIAL MOTTO of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was 'UNITED BY EMOTION' — NOT 'A New World'. This was the first time the IOC had translated the official motto into English, having been unveiled in 2020 by the Tokyo Organising Committee. (Separately, the IOC's overall Olympic motto 'Citius, Altius, Fortius' was updated in 2021 to add 'Communiter' meaning 'Together'.) 'A New World' was NOT the Tokyo 2020 motto.
Statement 2 is CORRECT. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics introduced/re-introduced FIVE additional sports:
- KARATE — debuted at the Olympics (martial art).
- SKATEBOARDING — Olympic debut (in Street and Park formats).
- SURFING — Olympic debut (held at Tsurigasaki Beach).
- SPORT CLIMBING — Olympic debut (Combined event of Speed, Bouldering, Lead).
- BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL — re-included for Tokyo after being absent since Beijing 2008.
The IOC's policy under the Olympic Agenda 2020 (and the new Olympic Agenda 2020+5) gives host cities flexibility to propose sports relevant to their region/youth appeal. Tokyo leveraged this to add youth-oriented sports (skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing) and culturally significant Japanese sport (karate, baseball-softball).
Some of these — baseball, softball, karate — were NOT carried forward to Paris 2024. Sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing continued to Paris.
