Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. The Quit India Resolution was adopted by the AICC.
Answer: A. THE QUIT INDIA RESOLUTION WAS ADOPTED BY THE AICC ON 8 AUGUST 1942. The QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT (also called Bharat Chhodo Andolan) was launched at a HISTORIC MEETING OF THE ALL INDIA CONGRESS COMMITTEE (AICC) held at GOWALIA TANK MAIDAN, BOMBAY (now AUGUST KRANTI MAIDAN, Mumbai) on 7-8 AUGUST 1942. On 8 AUGUST 1942, the AICC PASSED THE QUIT INDIA RESOLUTION drafted by Maulana Azad and moved by Jawaharlal Nehru, formally calling for the immediate end of British rule in India and authorising mass nonviolent struggle. Gandhi delivered his famous 'DO OR DIE' (Karenge ya Marenge) speech that day. Subsequent events: - 9 August 1942 — Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, Azad and other top Congress leaders were ARRESTED in the early morning. Gandhi was sent to Aga Khan Palace, Pune. - The movement broke out spontaneously across India under second-rank leadership and people's spontaneous action. - Parallel governments were established (Tamluk in Bengal, Satara in Maharashtra, Ballia in UP). - Heavily suppressed by the British. Distractors: (B) The Viceroy's Executive Council was expanded to include more Indians at various points (1916 Lucknow Pact follow-up, August 1941 expansion, 1946 Interim Government), but NOT on 8 August 1942. (C) Congress ministries resigned in 1939 (October-November) over India's involvement in WWII without consultation — NOT 1942. (D) Cripps Mission was MARCH-APRIL 1942 (failed), proposing Dominion Status — NOT 8 August. Source: NCERT Class 12 Themes in Indian History Part III 'Mahatma Gandhi and the Nationalist Movement'.
