Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. Rabindranath Tagore translated the National Anthem from Bengali to English here.
Answer: C. RABINDRANATH TAGORE TRANSLATED THE NATIONAL ANTHEM (JANA GANA MANA) FROM BENGALI TO ENGLISH AT MADANAPALLE. MADANAPALLE is a town in Annamayya district (formerly Chittoor district) of ANDHRA PRADESH. In 1919, Rabindranath Tagore visited the BESANT THEOSOPHICAL COLLEGE in Madanapalle at the invitation of its principal James H. Cousins (Irish poet and theosophist). During his stay (28 February 1919), Tagore composed an English translation of his Bengali song 'Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata' (penned by him in 1911), the first stanza of which is JANA GANA MANA. Tagore titled the English version 'THE MORNING SONG OF INDIA'. The original handwritten English manuscript is preserved at the college library. JANA GANA MANA was later adopted as the NATIONAL ANTHEM OF INDIA by the Constituent Assembly on 24 January 1950. Distractors: (A) PINGALI VENKAYYA, who designed the precursor of the tricolour Indian flag (presented to Gandhi at Vijayawada AICC session in 1921), worked from MACHILIPATNAM (Bandar)/Vijayawada area, NOT Madanapalle. (His birthplace is Bhatlapenumarru, Krishna district.) (B) PATTABHI SITARAMAYYA was a Congress leader from Andhra associated with Masulipatnam, not Madanapalle. He authored 'The History of the Indian National Congress' and stood as Congress President in 1939 (defeated by Subhas Bose). (D) Theosophical Society's HEADQUARTERS were established at ADYAR, CHENNAI by Madame Blavatsky and Colonel Olcott in 1882 — NOT Madanapalle. (Besant Theosophical College at Madanapalle is a branch institution.)
