An almirah is sold for 5,225 after a discount of 5%. Its marked price was:
A5,450
B5,500
C5,600
D5,750
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. 5,500
1. A 5 per cent discount means the buyer pays 95 per cent of the marked price.
2. So 95 per cent of the marked price = 5225.
3. One per cent is therefore 5225 / 95 = 55.
4. The full marked price is 100 x 55 = 5500.
5. Adding 5 per cent to 5225 instead would give 5486, which is why working backwards from the sale price must use 95, not 105.
