In the general equation of a line, A and B must not both be:

1. If both coefficients vanished, no x or y would remain. 2. The equation would then describe no line at all. 3. A and B are required not to be zero simultaneously. 4. So at least one of them must be non-zero. _Source: syllabus Mathematics, Ch 9 'Straight Lines'_
