ROBERT SEWELL: Madras Civil Service officer; published 'A Forgotten Empire: Vijayanagar' (1900), pioneering work on Hampi. JAMES BURGESS: First Director General of the ASI for Western and Southern India; published 'The Buddhist Stupas of Amaravati' and many ASI reports. WALTER ELLIOT: Madras Civil Service officer; collected Amaravati stupa marble sculptures (now in British Museum), wrote on South Indian numismatics.
