Who among the following rulers of medieval Gujarat surrendered Diu to Portuguese?
AAhmad Shah
BMahmud Begarha
CBahadur Shah
DMuhammad Shah
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. Bahadur Shah
Answer: C. BAHADUR SHAH of Gujarat surrendered Diu to the Portuguese.
Bahadur Shah ruled Gujarat from 1526 to 1537 CE. Under pressure from the advancing Mughals under Humayun and seeking Portuguese naval assistance, Bahadur Shah signed the Treaty of Bassein 1534 and the Treaty of Diu 1535, which granted the Portuguese the strategic island of Diu and rights to build a fortress there. The Portuguese fort at Diu became one of their most important Indian Ocean strongpoints.
Bahadur Shah was later killed in 1537 in a confused confrontation with the Portuguese, while reportedly meeting them on a ship.
Distractors:
(A) Ahmad Shah I (1411-1442) founded Ahmedabad city — predates Portuguese arrival in India (1498).
(B) Mahmud Begarha (1458-1511) consolidated the Sultanate but did not surrender Diu.
(D) Muhammad Shah refers to several rulers but not the one who surrendered Diu.
