With reference to India's projects on connectivity, consider the following statements: 1. East-West Corridor under Golden Quadrilateral Project connects Dibrugarh and Surat. 2. Trilateral Highway connects Moreh in Manipur and Chiang Mai in Thailand via Myanmar. 3. Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor connects Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh with Kunming in China. How many of the above statements are correct?

AOnly one
BOnly two
CAll three
DNone
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: D. None
Answer: D. NONE of the three connectivity statements is correct. (1) East-West Corridor connects Dibrugarh and Surat: WRONG. The East-West Corridor under the National Highways Development Project (NHDP Phase II) connects PORBANDAR (Gujarat) and SILCHAR (Assam), passing through 7 states. It does NOT connect Dibrugarh to Surat. (2) Trilateral Highway connects Moreh to Chiang Mai: WRONG. The India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway runs from MOREH (Manipur) to MAE SOT (Thailand) via Bagan and Yangon in Myanmar. The Thai terminus is Mae Sot, NOT Chiang Mai (which is in northern Thailand off the route). (3) BCIM Economic Corridor connects Varanasi to Kunming: WRONG. The BCIM (Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar) Economic Corridor was planned to connect KOLKATA (India) to KUNMING (China) via Dhaka, Mandalay and intermediate cities. Varanasi was never the Indian terminus. The BCIM project has been largely stalled since 2017. Source: Ministry of External Affairs / Ministry of Road Transport project documents.
