BBoth Statement-I and Statement-II are correct, but Statement-II does not explain Statement-I
CStatement-I is correct, but Statement-II is incorrect
DStatement-I is incorrect, but Statement-II is correct
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: D. Statement-I is incorrect, but Statement-II is correct
Answer: D. Statement-I is incorrect; Statement-II is correct.
Statement-I: 'India does not import apples from USA' is INCORRECT. India DOES import apples from the United States. In June 2023, as part of PM Modi's state visit, India agreed to remove retaliatory tariffs imposed in 2019 on US apples (and other products), and US apple imports resumed at higher volumes. The Washington State apple industry is a significant supplier.
Statement-II: India's law prohibits import of Genetically Modified (GM) food without approval of the competent authority. CORRECT. Under the Environment Protection Act 1986 and the Rules notified under it (1989), the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) of MoEFCC must approve any GM food import or domestic release. FSSAI also regulates GM food under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
So Statement-II is correct but Statement-I is wrong.
