Consider the following statements: Statement-I: Thickness of the troposphere at the equator is much greater as compared to poles. Statement-II: At the equator, heat is transported to great heights by strong convectional currents. Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above statements?

ABoth Statement-I and Statement-II are correct and Statement-II explains Statement-I
BBoth Statement-I and Statement-II are correct, but Statement-II does not explain Statement-I
CStatement-I is correct, but Statement-II is incorrect
DStatement-I is incorrect, but Statement-II is correct
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. Both Statement-I and Statement-II are correct and Statement-II explains Statement-I
Answer: A. Both statements are CORRECT and Statement-II explains Statement-I. The troposphere is about 17-18 km thick at the equator but only 8-9 km at the poles. The reason is exactly what Statement-II says: intense solar heating at the equator drives strong vertical convection, lifting warm air to great heights and pushing the tropopause boundary higher. At the poles, weak convection means a much thinner troposphere. So Statement-II is the direct mechanism behind Statement-I.
