Aristotle held that matter was made from four elements: fire, earth, water and:

1. Early Greek thinking listed a small number of fundamental substances. 2. Aristotle and others came to the conclusion that matter consisted of various combinations of the four elements. 3. Those four were fire, earth, air and water. 4.
