Before starting the salt march, Gandhi sent a letter with demands to:

1. On 31 January 1930 Gandhi wrote to the Viceroy, Lord Irwin. 2. The letter was in effect an ultimatum with a deadline of 11 March. 3. When Irwin would not negotiate, the salt march began. _Source: syllabus History, 'Nationalism in India' (jess302)_
