Which four anterior pituitary hormones are grouped as the tropic hormones?
ATSH, ACTH, FSH and LH
BGH, PRL, FSH and LH
CTSH, ACTH, GH and PRL
DGH, PRL, ADH and TSH
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. TSH, ACTH, FSH and LH
1. A tropic hormone turns the function of another endocrine gland on or off.
2. Thyroid-stimulating hormone drives the thyroid and adrenocorticotropic hormone drives the adrenal cortex.
3. Follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinising hormone drive the gonads, so those four are the tropic set.
4. Growth hormone and prolactin act on body tissues and mammary glands rather than on another gland, and antidiuretic hormone is not even an anterior lobe product.
