Which state seceded first, before the Confederate States of America was formed?

1. South Carolina had long waited for an event that would unite the south against the antislavery forces. 2. Once the returns of the 1860 election were certain, a convention there declared the Union dissolved. 3. Other southern states promptly followed that example. 4. On 8 February 1861 those states formed the Confederate States of America. 5.
