A mixture holds two liquids, one boiling at 78 degrees and one at 100 degrees. The mixture is heated slowly. Which liquid is collected first?
AThe one boiling at 100
BThe one boiling at 78
CBoth at the same time
DNeither of the two
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. The one boiling at 78
1. Heating a mixture raises its temperature gradually from room temperature.
2. The lower of the two boiling points, 78 degrees, is reached first.
3. At that temperature the first liquid boils and turns into vapour.
4. The second liquid does not boil yet, because 100 degrees has not been reached.
5. The vapour is cooled in a condenser and collected as a liquid again.
6. So the liquid boiling at 78 degrees is collected first.
7. They cannot come over together, because their boiling points differ.
