1. Resistors joined consecutively with no branches between them are in series.
2. Charge is never created or destroyed anywhere in the circuit.
3. With no branch to take charge away, the same charge that enters a resistor must leave it.
4. So the rate of flow of charge, the current, is the same at every point of the series string.
5. Splitting of the current happens only where the circuit branches, which is the parallel case.
