A data set runs 3, 5, 8, 11, 14 and 16. What is its median?
AIt is 8
BIt is 11
CIt is 9.5
DIt is 9
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. It is 9.5
1. The data are already sorted from smallest to largest.
2. There are six values, which is an even number, so no single value sits in the middle.
3. The middle lies between the third value, 8, and the fourth value, 11.
4. When the middle falls between two values, the median is the average of those two values.
5. Adding 8 and 11 gives 19, and half of 19 is 9.5.
6. Answering 8 or 11 picks one of the two middle values instead of averaging them.
