A solid salt crystal will not conduct electricity, but the same salt dissolved in water will. What explains this?

1. An electric current needs charged particles that are free to move.
2. An ionic solid is built of ions, so the charges are present even in the crystal.
3. In the crystal lattice those ions are held very tightly in fixed positions.
4. With nothing free to move, the solid crystal does not conduct.
5. Dissolving breaks the lattice apart and lets the ions move through the solution.
6. Solid crystals do not conduct electricity but ionic solutions do.
7. Pure water on its own conducts very poorly, so the water is not the current carrier here.
