Using fraction pieces, what is 3/8 plus 2/8?

A5/16
B6/8
C1/8
D5/8
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: D. 5/8
1. Both fractions already have the same denominator, 8. 2. To add same-size pieces, we just add the number of pieces. 3. There are 3 eighths and 2 more eighths, giving 3 + 2 = 5 eighths. 4. So 3/8 + 2/8 = 5/8, and the denominator stays at 8 throughout, unlike the wrong total of 5/16 that comes from adding the denominators too. _Source: OpenStax Prealgebra (CC BY 4.0), Ch 4 "Fractions", section 4.4 Add and Subtract Fractions with Common Denominators_
