How many different gamete types can a YyRr plant produce, and what are they?

ATwo types, namely YR and yr only
BEight types, one for each allele pair
CSixteen types, one for each square box
DFour types, namely YR, Yr, yR and yr
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: D. Four types, namely YR, Yr, yR and yr
1. Segregation requires each gamete to receive either R or r, and either Y or y. 2. Independent assortment means a gamete carrying r is equally likely to carry Y or y. 3. Combining the two choices gives two times two, which is four gamete types. 4. Written out, those four are YR, Yr, yR and yr, and all are equally likely. 5. Only two gamete types would appear if the two genes were tightly linked on one chromosome. _Source: OpenStax Biology (1st ed., CC BY 4.0), Ch 12 "Mendel's Experiments and Heredity", section 12.3 Laws of Inheritance_
