Two pink snapdragons are crossed. What phenotypic ratio of red to pink to white is expected?

A3 to 1 to 0
B1 to 1 to 1
C1 to 2 to 1
D2 to 1 to 1
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. 1 to 2 to 1
1. Write the red allele as R and the white allele as W, and note that pink plants are heterozygous RW. 2. Each pink parent makes two gamete types in equal numbers, R and W. 3. Draw the two by two square with R and W on the top and R and W down the side. 4. The four boxes read RR, RW, WR and WW. 5. That gives genotypes in the ratio 1 RR to 2 RW to 1 WW. 6. Under incomplete dominance every genotype has its own appearance, so RR is red, RW is pink and WW is white. 7. The phenotypic ratio is therefore 1 red to 2 pink to 1 white. 8. A 3 to 1 result would require the heterozygote to look like the homozygous dominant, which it does not here. _Source: OpenStax Biology (1st ed., CC BY 4.0), Ch 12 "Mendel's Experiments and Heredity", section 12.2 Characteristics and Traits_
