A snapdragon homozygous for red flowers is crossed with one homozygous for white flowers. What colour are all the offspring?
AAll of them red
BAll of them pink
CAll of them white
DHalf red, half white
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. All of them pink
1. Each homozygous parent can donate only one kind of allele, red from one and white from the other.
2. Every offspring therefore carries one red allele and one white allele.
3. In snapdragons the red allele is only incompletely dominant over the white allele.
4. The heterozygote therefore shows an intermediate phenotype, which is pink.
5. A half and half split is impossible, since only one genotype can be produced from two homozygous parents.
