A homozygous recessive dwarf pea plant is crossed with a heterozygous tall plant. What phenotypic ratio results?
A3 tall to 1 dwarf
B1 tall to 1 dwarf
CAll tall, no dwarf
D1 tall to 3 dwarf
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. 1 tall to 1 dwarf
1. Write the cross as tt multiplied by Tt, where T is tall and t is dwarf.
2. The tt parent makes only t gametes, and the Tt parent makes T and t in equal numbers.
3. Draw the square with T and t across the top and t on both side rows.
4. The four boxes read Tt, tt, Tt and tt.
5. Two boxes are Tt, which is tall, and two boxes are tt, which is dwarf.
6. That is a 1 tall to 1 dwarf phenotypic ratio.
7. A 3 to 1 result would need both parents to be heterozygous, which is not the case here.
