Fishing line unwinds from a reel at a radius of 4.50 cm from the axis while the reel turns at 220 rad/s. At what speed does the line leave the reel?
A9.90 m/s
B4.89 m/s
C99.0 m/s
D1.10 m/s
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. 9.90 m/s
1. Linear and angular speed are linked by v = r omega.
2. Convert the radius to metres first, so r = 4.50 cm = 0.0450 m.
3. Substituting, v = (0.0450 m)(220 rad/s).
4. That gives v = 9.90 m/s, since radians are dimensionless.
5. Leaving the radius in centimetres gives 99.0 m/s, ten times too large.
