A point sits at radius r on a wheel turning with angular velocity omega. What is its linear speed?
Av = omega divided by r
Bv = r divided by omega
Cv = r times omega
Dv = omega times r squared
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. v = r times omega
1. In one turn a point at radius r travels a circumference, so distance scales with the radius.
2. The relation between linear and angular speed is therefore v = r omega.
3. Rearranged, this also reads omega = v / r, which is how angular velocity is found from linear speed.
4. Dividing by r instead of multiplying would make a point on the rim slower than one near the axle.
