About how much of the filtered water still reaches the collecting ducts?
AAbout 1 percent, roughly 2 L
BAbout 30 percent, roughly 54 L
CAbout 50 percent, roughly 90 L
DAbout 10 percent, roughly 18 L
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: D. About 10 percent, roughly 18 L
1. Most water recovery is finished before the collecting ducts, in the proximal tubule, loop and distal tubule.
2. About 10 percent of the filtered water, roughly 18 litres a day, still arrives at the collecting ducts.
3. That remainder is the portion ADH controls, which is why the ducts set the final urine volume.
4. Under the influence of ADH the ducts can recover almost all of it in dehydration or almost none in over-hydration.
