If 0.850 L of 5.00 M copper nitrate is diluted with water to 1.80 L, what is the new molarity?
A10.6 M
B4.25 M
C2.36 M
D1.18 M
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. 2.36 M
1. Use the dilution equation C1V1 = C2V2 and rearrange for C2.
2. That gives C2 = C1V1 / V2.
3. Substituting gives C2 = 5.00 mol/L x 0.850 L / 1.80 L.
4. The numerator is 4.25 mol and dividing by 1.80 L gives 2.36 M.
5. The volume more than doubles, so the answer should be a bit under half of 5 M, which it is.
6. The value 4.25 M is the mole count from the numerator, reported without the final division.
