A teaspoon holding about 0.01 mol of sucrose is stirred into 200 mL of tea. What is the molarity of sucrose?
A0.20 M
B0.005 M
C0.05 M
D2.0 M
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. 0.05 M
1. Molarity is moles of solute per litre of solution.
2. Convert 200 mL to litres: 200 mL / 1000 = 0.200 L.
3. Divide: 0.01 mol / 0.200 L = 0.05 M.
4. The value 0.005 M would follow from dividing by 2 L instead of 0.2 L, a factor of ten slip.
5. A sanity check helps: one fifth of a litre holds 0.01 mol, so a full litre would hold five times as much.
