Glycine is C2H5O2N. Using C = 12.01, H = 1.008, O = 16.00 and N = 14.007 g/mol, what is its molar mass?

A61.06 g/mol
B75.07 g/mol
C43.07 g/mol
D89.08 g/mol
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. 75.07 g/mol
1. One mole of glycine contains 2 mol carbon, 5 mol hydrogen, 2 mol oxygen and 1 mol nitrogen. 2. Carbon contributes 2 x 12.01 = 24.02 g/mol. 3. Hydrogen contributes 5 x 1.008 = 5.040 g/mol. 4. Oxygen contributes 2 x 16.00 = 32.00 g/mol and nitrogen contributes 14.007 g/mol. 5. The total is 24.02 + 5.040 + 32.00 + 14.007 = 75.07 g/mol. 6. The value 61.06 g/mol is the trap for anyone who leaves the nitrogen atom out. _Source: OpenStax Chemistry (CC BY 4.0), Ch 3 "Composition of Substances and Solutions", section 3.1 Formula Mass and the Mole Concept_
