Aspirin has the molecular formula C9H8O4. With C = 12.01, H = 1.008 and O = 16.00 amu, what is its molecular mass?

A180.15 amu
B116.15 amu
C108.09 amu
D244.15 amu
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. 180.15 amu
1. Carbon contributes 9 x 12.01 amu = 108.09 amu. 2. Hydrogen contributes 8 x 1.008 amu = 8.064 amu. 3. Oxygen contributes 4 x 16.00 amu = 64.00 amu. 4. The total is 108.09 + 8.064 + 64.00 = 180.15 amu. 5. The value 116.15 amu is what you get if the oxygen atoms are left out of the sum. _Source: OpenStax Chemistry (CC BY 4.0), Ch 3 "Composition of Substances and Solutions", section 3.1 Formula Mass and the Mole Concept_
