Why is the Wheatstone arrangement called a bridge?
AThe galvanometer bridges two branches of it
BThe unknown resistor bridges the two sources
CThe wire bridges the gap between two cells
DThe switch bridges the two halves of the loop
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. The galvanometer bridges two branches of it
1. The circuit splits into two parallel branches, each carrying a pair of resistances in series.
2. The galvanometer is connected across from the midpoint of one branch to the midpoint of the other.
3. Spanning the two branches like that is what gives the arrangement its name.
4. When the bridge is balanced those two midpoints sit at the same potential, so the detector reads zero.
