The 'Doctrine of Lapse' was applied to annex several Indian states. Which of these was NOT annexed under the Doctrine?
ASatara
BJhansi
CAwadh
DNagpur
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. Awadh
Satara (1848), Sambalpur (1850), Udaipur (1852), Nagpur (1853) and Jhansi (1854) were annexed under the Doctrine of Lapse. Awadh, however, was taken over in 1856 under a different pretext — the British declared they were 'obliged by duty' to relieve the people from 'misgovernment' of the Nawab. So Awadh's annexation was not formally under the Doctrine of Lapse, though it followed the same expansionist policy.
