Migratory birds travel to far-away places once every year mainly because:

Migration is primarily a response to climate. As winter approaches, food becomes scarce and temperatures drop in the bird's native range, so they fly to warmer regions (often thousands of kilometres) — to find food and to lay eggs in milder conditions. They return when their original habitat becomes hospitable again.
