For which rational number a is the statement 'a is its own additive inverse' TRUE?
Aa = 0
Ba = 1
Ca = −1
DAny rational number
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. a = 0
a + (−a) = 0 by definition of additive inverse. For a to equal its own additive inverse, we need a = −a, i.e. 2a = 0 and so a = 0. Only 0 is its own additive inverse.
