Which oxide is amphoteric?
ANa₂O
BAl₂O₃
CMgO
DSO₂
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. Al₂O₃
1. An amphoteric oxide reacts with both acids and bases.
2. In period 3 the basic character decreases from left to right.
3. Aluminium sits in the middle of period 3 and shows borderline metallic behaviour.
4. Al₂O₃ reacts with HCl as a base and with NaOH as an acid.
5. Hence Al₂O₃ is the amphoteric oxide among these four.
6. Na₂O and MgO are basic, SO₂ is acidic.
