A plastic bottle is filled with water and four small holes are made at the same height around its bottom. Streams of water shoot out roughly the same horizontal distance from each hole, as shown. Which statement does this observation best support?
AWater flows out only because of friction.
BLiquids exert different pressure in different horizontal directions.
CLiquids exert pressure only on the bottom of the container.
DAt the same depth, a liquid exerts equal pressure on the walls in all directions.
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: D. At the same depth, a liquid exerts equal pressure on the walls in all directions.
Since all four holes are at the same depth below the water surface, and the streams travel similar distances, the pressure pushing water out is the same at each hole. This shows that at any given depth, a liquid exerts equal pressure on the walls in all directions.
