Using the relation $\alpha = \dfrac{\lambda_m^c}{\lambda_m^{\infty}}$, what is the degree of dissociation $\alpha$ if $\lambda_m^c = 400$ and $\lambda_m^{\infty} = 850$?

A$\dfrac{8}{17}$
B$\dfrac{17}{8}$
C$\dfrac{4}{85}$
D$\dfrac{5}{8}$
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. $\dfrac{8}{17}$
Substitute the values: $\alpha = \dfrac{400}{850} = \dfrac{8}{17}$. Since degree of dissociation must be less than 1, $\dfrac{17}{8}$ is not physically reasonable here.
