By definition, hydrocarbons contain **only** carbon and hydrogen atoms. Adding oxygen, nitrogen, halogens, etc. produces other functional-group families (alcohols, amines, halides).
Three main classes:

- **Alkenes**: contain at least one C=C double bond, $C_nH_{2n}$.
