Worked practice questions

**Molar conductivity** $\Lambda$ is defined as:

  1. $\Lambda = \kappa^2 c$
  2. $\Lambda = c / \kappa$
  3. $\Lambda = \kappa / c$
  4. $\Lambda = \kappa \cdot c$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. $\Lambda = \kappa / c$

Molar conductivity = conductivity divided by molar concentration: $\Lambda = \kappa/c$. In common units, $\Lambda = 1000\,\kappa/c$ when $\kappa$ is in Ω⁻¹ cm⁻¹ and $c$ in mol L⁻¹.

On dilution, the **molar conductivity** ($\Lambda$) of an electrolyte:

  1. Remains the same
  2. Increases (approaches $\Lambda_0$)
  3. Becomes negative
  4. Decreases
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. Increases (approaches $\Lambda_0$)

Molar conductivity = conductance per mole of electrolyte. On dilution more ions are produced per mole of electrolyte (more complete dissociation, less inter-ionic interaction) so $\Lambda$ rises and asymptotes to $\Lambda_0$ at infinite dilution.

The molar conductivity of 0.05 M BaCl₂ solution at 25 °C is 223 Ω⁻¹ cm² mol⁻¹. Its conductivity ($\kappa$) is:

  1. $0.223$ Ω⁻¹ cm⁻¹
  2. $4.46 \times 10^{-3}$ Ω⁻¹ cm⁻¹
  3. $0.01115$ Ω⁻¹ cm⁻¹
  4. $1.115$ Ω⁻¹ cm⁻¹
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. $0.01115$ Ω⁻¹ cm⁻¹

$\kappa = \Lambda \cdot c / 1000 = (223)(0.05)/1000 = 0.01115$ Ω⁻¹ cm⁻¹.
