Worked practice questions

Alcohols have **higher boiling points** than ethers of similar molecular weight because:

  1. Alcohols form intermolecular hydrogen bonds (O–H···O)
  2. Alcohols are less polar
  3. Ethers are gases
  4. Ethers can't dissolve
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. Alcohols form intermolecular hydrogen bonds (O–H···O)

Alcohols H-bond strongly through OH groups. Ethers (R-O-R) lack OH, only weak dipole-dipole/dispersion forces. **Example:** ethanol (b.p. 78 °C) vs dimethyl ether (b.p. −24 °C) — both C₂H₆O!
